Note of the author: About the stars that appear in the hotels, they actually only show things like how wide is the walkway, if they have a elevator and other bureaucratic regulations that usually reflects the personal point of view of the "law makers and officials in turn" at the congress or the Guatemalan Tourism Institute staff in charge of assign the stars. When I was President of the Guatemala Hotel Association (1992) we try to modify the Law because the ecotourism was directly affected with the imposition of the so-called "regulations for hotel classification" and because this wore directly linked whit the prices authorized, this means that places build in the jungle whit local materials but high transportation expenses or hotels located at historical buildings with high preservation cost can not survive the official price authorization scan trough the "modern regulations of hotel classification", after a year of fight finally we wore able to achieve some price freedom but the old obsolete hotel regulations stay. So the message is...

Don't care much about how many stars the hotels have in Guatemala. Some with few stars or none will be nicer than the full of star hotels in terms of knowledgeable travelers, so I strongly recommend that before you come to Guatemala buy and Read a good international guide like Paul Glassmans, Centralamerican Handbook, Guatemala a natural destination, Le guide du routard, etc. And of course read about The excellent Posada Belen Reputation.
